A Scenic Escape: Field Trip to Illikal kallu and Vagamon

As part of our B.Ed. program, the English and Natural Science option groups embarked on an exhilarating field trip on October 28, 2024, to explore the breathtaking beauty of Illikal Kallu, the Vagamon Pine Forest, and the sprawling Vagamon Meadows. The trip, designed to blend recreation with learning, was a perfect getaway into the lap of nature and a bonding experience for all participants.

Illikal Kallu: A Majestic Beginning

Our journey began with a visit to Illikal Kallu, a towering monolithic hill that offered a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding valleys. The challenging yet invigorating trek to the peak tested our stamina and rewarded us with awe-inspiring vistas of the mist-laden hills. The natural rock formations and the cool mountain breeze were a reminder of the untouched beauty of nature.

Vagamon Pine Forest: A Whispering Haven

Our next stop was the enchanting Vagamon Pine Forest, a serene retreat where towering pine trees stretched endlessly toward the sky. The tranquility of the forest, accompanied by the soft rustling of pine needles underfoot, created a magical ambiance. We enjoyed capturing moments amidst the tall trees, letting the fresh air rejuvenate our spirits. The forest served as a perfect backdrop for reflections on nature's calming influence.

Vagamon Meadows: Rolling Hills of Joy

The day concluded at the expansive Vagamon Meadows, a carpet of lush green that seemed to stretch to infinity. The undulating hills, kissed by the gentle sunlight and adorned with wildflowers, were a sight to behold. The group relished the open space, engaging in games, photography, and heartfelt conversations.

The field trip was more than just a leisure activity. It offered us a deeper understanding of the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature, fostering respect for the environment. For the English optional group, the landscapes provided poetic inspiration, while the Natural Science group observed biodiversity and ecological harmony in action.

The trip strengthened friendships and created cherished memories. The laughter, shared meals, and collective awe at nature’s splendor brought us closer as a team, adding a personal dimension to our academic journey.

A Clean Slate: Understanding Menstrual Hygiene and Cups

On October 22rd 2024, our college had the privilege of hosting an enlightening awareness talk organized by the Indian Dental Association. The session, led by the esteemed Dr. Akhila Rachel Raju, focused on an essential yet often overlooked topic—menstrual hygiene and the use of menstrual cups. Dr. Akhila Rachel Raju began by addressing the importance of normalizing conversations around menstruation, emphasizing that it is a natural process that should not be stigmatized. She shed light on common misconceptions and highlighted the impact of poor menstrual hygiene on physical and mental health.

Understanding Menstrual Cups

A significant part of the session was dedicated to introducing menstrual cups as a sustainable and hygienic alternative to traditional menstrual products. Dr. Akhila explained:

  • What menstrual cups are: Flexible, reusable cups made of medical-grade silicone.
  • How they work: Collecting menstrual fluid instead of absorbing it.
  • Benefits: Eco-friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and reduced risk of infections.

She also provided a detailed explanation on how to use, clean, and store menstrual cups, ensuring clarity for all participants.

The talk emphasized the role of awareness in empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their health. By promoting menstrual cups, the session also contributed to the larger goal of environmental sustainability. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Indian Dental Association and Dr. Akhila Rachel Raju for organizing such an impactful session. The talk not only educated attendees about menstrual hygiene but also inspired them to advocate for open conversations and sustainable practices.

The event served as a reminder that small changes can lead to significant impacts—on personal health, societal attitudes, and the environment. It was a step forward in breaking taboos and fostering a healthier, more informed community.

PLATO'S LIFE AND EDUCATIONAL CONTRIBUTION

Spreading Smiles: SUPW Visit to Gandhi bhavan

On October 22, 2024, as part of our SUPW (Socially Useful Productive Work) activity, the English optional group visited Gandhi bhavan Old Age Home in Pathanapuram. Accompanied by our class teacher, E.K. Jijan, and two non-teaching staff members, the visit offered a meaningful opportunity to connect with the elderly and learn about the remarkable work done by Gandhibhavan’s team.

Founded in 2002 by Punalur Somarajan, Gandhibhavan provides shelter to over 1,200 individuals, including the elderly, orphans, and patients with severe illnesses like cancer and HIV. Operated by 300 volunteers and supported by donations, the facility is thoughtfully designed with residential quarters, prayer spaces, and recreational areas to create a nurturing environment.

Our teacher, E.K. Jijin, and students Ashna and Neethu addressed the residents, expressing gratitude and admiration. We engaged with the residents, listened to their stories, and observed their resilience. Gandhibhavan’s self-sustaining activities—handicrafts, paper-making, and soap production—highlighted the residents’ dedication and creativity.

Sharing a meal with the residents added a personal touch, fostering warmth and connection. By 2:30 p.m., we concluded our visit with hearts full of gratitude and inspiration. The visit to Gandhibhavan was a profound experience, teaching us the value of empathy, kindness, and social responsibility. It reinforced the importance of community service and left a lasting impact on all of us.

This SUPW activity was a beautiful reminder of the power of compassion and the difference it makes in people’s lives.
