A Clean Slate: Understanding Menstrual Hygiene and Cups

On October 22rd 2024, our college had the privilege of hosting an enlightening awareness talk organized by the Indian Dental Association. The session, led by the esteemed Dr. Akhila Rachel Raju, focused on an essential yet often overlooked topic—menstrual hygiene and the use of menstrual cups. Dr. Akhila Rachel Raju began by addressing the importance of normalizing conversations around menstruation, emphasizing that it is a natural process that should not be stigmatized. She shed light on common misconceptions and highlighted the impact of poor menstrual hygiene on physical and mental health.

Understanding Menstrual Cups

A significant part of the session was dedicated to introducing menstrual cups as a sustainable and hygienic alternative to traditional menstrual products. Dr. Akhila explained:

  • What menstrual cups are: Flexible, reusable cups made of medical-grade silicone.
  • How they work: Collecting menstrual fluid instead of absorbing it.
  • Benefits: Eco-friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and reduced risk of infections.

She also provided a detailed explanation on how to use, clean, and store menstrual cups, ensuring clarity for all participants.

The talk emphasized the role of awareness in empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their health. By promoting menstrual cups, the session also contributed to the larger goal of environmental sustainability. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Indian Dental Association and Dr. Akhila Rachel Raju for organizing such an impactful session. The talk not only educated attendees about menstrual hygiene but also inspired them to advocate for open conversations and sustainable practices.

The event served as a reminder that small changes can lead to significant impacts—on personal health, societal attitudes, and the environment. It was a step forward in breaking taboos and fostering a healthier, more informed community.
